1° rallye mondial : 1989
Un des plus grand mystère du rallye. Freddy débute
le karting avec des super résultats à la clé. Mais comme tout Belge qui se
respecte, il s’oriente vers le rallye. Son style de pilotage à la Beguin,
fait de jolies trajectoires (quand ça apporte quelques dixièmes de
secondes) lui sied à merveille. Avec l’aide de ses parents (concessionnaire
OPEL), il s’engage avec une ASTRA en mondial, et fut repéré par MARLBORO à
partir de 93 (champion F2). S’en suit la période TOYOTA avec de jolis
résultats à la clé. A un certain moment, l’usine avait misé sur lui plutôt
que sur AURIOL. MITSUBISHI l’engage mais la comparaison avec MAKINEN
ne lui servira guère. Après quelques résultats en ACCENT, 206 et 307, il
arrêtera le mondial et là, tout explose. Plus personne ne croit vraiment en
lui sauf SKODA. Après la POLO (il fut le premier pilote à son volant), il
excellera au volant de la petite « tcheque » . Imbattable sur la plupart des terrains en Europe et
surtout dans son pays où il glanera 4 titres. Il gagnera 11 fois Ypres, et ceux qui ont
fait Ypres savent ce que cela veut dire. Chapeau Freddy, tu as été un super
Crack, nous, on regrette que ton vrai talent a explosé sur le tard, et
c’est à ce moment, quand tu étais le plus fort, que tu nous a laissé sur notre faim. A présent, en dehors de
quelques apparitions en compagnie de son pote peter
TSJOEN (un grand pilote également), histoire de garder la main (17° tout de
même en Italie et Ypres cette année) tu aides également les jeunes. Merci
et encore bravo. Un des plus grand mystère par le fait qu’on se demande
s’il n’était pas encore plus rapide en fin des années 2000…..alors qu’il
officiait en europe et plus en mondial.
142° pilote de tous les temps (5° belge), plutôt typé
asphalte quoi que la terre, il aime bien !!! Rallye préféré le
Portugal (comme ALEN ! ) Voiture
préférée : la CELICA en mondial, mais en ce qui nous concerne on
aurait dit la FABIA pour laquelle il fut le premier et meilleur ambassadeur

1st world rally: 1989
One of the biggest mysteries in rallying. Freddy started
karting with great results to his name. But like any self-respecting Belgian, he turned to rallying. His Beguin-style driving style, with nice trajectories (when it brings
a few tenths of a
second) suited him perfectly. With the help of his parents (OPEL dealer), he
entered an ASTRA in the world championship,
and was spotted by
MARLBORO from 93 (F2 champion). This was followed by the TOYOTA period with nice results to his name. At one point, the factory had bet on him rather than AURIOL.
MITSUBISHI hired him
but the comparison with
MAKINEN would not be of
much use to him. After a few results in
ACCENT, 206 and 307, he will
stop the world championship and there, everything explodes. Nobody really believes in him anymore except SKODA. After the POLO
(he was the first
driver to drive it), he
will excel at the wheel of the little "Czech". Unbeatable on most terrains in Europe and especially
in his country where he will win
4 titles. He will win 11 times Ypres, and those
who have done Ypres
know what that means. Hats off Freddy, you were a super Crack, we regret that your real talent exploded late, and it is at this time, when you were
the strongest, that you left us hungry. Now, apart from a few appearances in the company of
his buddy Peter TSJOEN
(also a great driver), just to keep your hand in (17th all
the same in Italy and
Ypres this year) you also help the youngsters. Thank you and congratulations again.

because we wonder if he wasn't even faster in the late 2000s... when he was
racing in Europe and not in the world.
